Musculoskeletal Injuries

Pulled your back, twisted your knee, tore your shoulder muscle or sprained your ankle? Musculoskeletal physiotherapy addresses everyday and sporting injuries affecting your muscles and joints. During your initial assessment you’ll undergo a thorough examination of your medical history and specific tests to diagnose your injury / cause of pain. I’ll design a plan for your rehabilitation including a combination of massage, dry-needling (if required or preferred) and stretches and strength exercises to address your muscle and joint imbalances. Depending on the severity of your injury, you may require (on average) between one to seven standard follow-up consultations.

Dance Physiotherapy

Suitable for young ballet students who are about to start pointe training. Adolescent cartilage and joints are still developing and susceptible to injury making premature pointe potentially dangerous if students are not ready. A number of factors can hinder a young student’s pointe progress including lack of flexibility in his / her joints and muscles, lack of calf endurance and also poor engagement and control of core muscles which are responsible for balance.

Dance physiotherapy is also great for improving ankle pointe movement. Some students suffer from stiff ankle joints and are unable to go into pointe position. Having trained in the Mulligan Concept, I can apply some gentle therapy to the ankle joints to restore or improve a ballet students ankle range of movement.

Post-surgery Rehab

Have you just had surgery on your ankle, knee, neck or shoulder?  Your orthopaedic surgeon is 99% likely to advise you to go to a reputable physiotherapist for some post-operative care.

You see, although surgery may have corrected your original injury e.g. a torn tendon or cartilage, it unfortunately causes secondary consequences such as muscle weakness and tightness, joint stiffness and also abnormal movement patterns.  Physiotherapy will assist you in achieving a smoother recovery and I personally have had nearly nine years of experience working along side a large orthopaedic surgeon's clinic and have also treated post-operative patients of specialists from North Sydney to Penrith.

Cervicogenic Headaches

Headaches originating from the neck are common in today’s environment where we spend most of our time sitting in an office, slouching and watching TV or making long commutes in the urban city landscape. Poor posture, stiff neck joints and muscle tension in your shoulders can cause cervicogenic headaches, otherwise known as headaches originating from your upper neck.

Having trained in the Mulligan Concept and the Maitland technique, these physiotherapy concepts will aid in the restoration of your neck movements if you suffer a stiff neck and also reduce your headaches if they are arising from your cervical spine. An initial physiotherapy assessment will determine whether your headache stems from your neck, poor posture, weak shoulder muscles or a combination of all three.

Tennis Elbow

Lateral epicondylalgia, also commonly known as ‘tennis elbow’ is a stubborn injury that can take months to resolve due to the degenerative nature of the common extensor tendon. In recent years, the Mulligan Concept has been proven to be one of the most efficient forms of tennis elbow management, quickly reducing pain and restoring your grip strength in a matter of a few sessions. I am one of only 42 certified Mulligan Practitioners in Australia and I have had much success assisting tennis elbow patients to a full recovery. Of course, we will also address the causes of tennis elbow which commonly include poor posture and manual handling, weak shoulder muscles and restrictions in the cervical and thoracic spine. Rehabilitation for tennis elbow typically requires 6 – 10 physiotherapy consultations depending on how long you’ve had your injury.

Kickboxers & Gymnasts

Kickboxers and gymnasts are one of my favourite sub-groups to work with, because you girls and guys are dedicated, hardworking and you are goal-driven!

Besides treating musculoskeletal injuries that arise from training and competitions, my approach has also assisted competing athletes in improving their hip flexibility and core strength to achieve a higher kick or a more controlled round kick.

As for gymnasts, the Mulligan technique combined with traditional sports physiotherapy can assist you in achieving the splits and also other movements such as plie, bridge, arabesque and high kick.
